EMDR Therapy
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured and highly effective form of therapy that is used to treat trauma. A traumatic memory, experience, or set of experiences is anything that affects our feeling of safety in the world and/or has led to a negative belief or view about ourselves. It may also be a "little T" trauma that is not an isolated incident but a pattern of experience that has left us with these negative beliefs or feelings. Responses to trauma can include intense emotional and physical disturbance that can leave us feeling helpless or stuck.  We may avoid certain situations or places so that we are not "triggered" into these responses. EMDR can help us to reprocess traumatic memories so that they no longer elicit these difficult feelings and can restore a sense of safety, peace, and self-acceptance.  Even if you're not sure if you've experienced a trauma, if you ever catch yourself thinking "there's something wrong with me", "I can't trust anyone", "I don't deserve love", or any other host of negative thoughts, chances are EMDR can help. So how does it work? You briefly focus on the identified memory, while using bilateral stimulation (BLS), such as eye movement or (self) tapping, which reduces reactivity and creates space to adaptively reprocess the memory as well as any associated beliefs stemming from it. This is similar to how we process our daily experiences during REM sleep.  If you're curious to learn more or think this could be a good fit, please reach out to set up a free consultation. I can provide EMDR as a stand alone shorter term treatment, or as part of individual therapy that incorporates other modalities as well.

Individual Therapy
Many of us struggle with issues of anxiety, feeling stuck, a lack of connection, or a sense of overwhelm.  Therapy can help.  It is a way to better understand ourselves, what we do that supports our happiness, and what we might do or believe that perhaps served us in the past, but no longer does.  It can help you to gain insight, self-compassion, and tools to help you feel a greater sense of peace, agency, and freedom in your life.

An important part of counseling is building trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship, so I place a focus on this as a foundation for our work together. From there, I want to support you in working toward goals that we co-create. In our sessions you can expect that I will listen compassionately, offer reflections and concrete tools, encourage you to trust yourself and your own insights, welcome your input and feedback, and maintain and encourage a sense of humor.

Couples Therapy
Relationships can be incredibly fulfilling.  They can also be very hard.  We often fall in love with people who have different strengths and growing edges than we do.  It is a natural way to learn from and support our partner(s)  and enrich our experiences. However, this can also be a source of conflict, difficulty understanding one another, and varied communication styles and needs.  In longer term relationships especially, a big challenge can be falling into entrenched roles or patterns that begin to occur very quickly or almost automatically.  In our work, I will help you to identify these roles and patterns, as well as gain tools and insight around how to slow them down, improve communication, and get "underneath" your most common arguments and stuck points.

Other common issues or topics I work with:
  • intimacy and sex
  • staying connected
  • overall questions around compatibility
  • resolving conflict
  • lack of trust
  • pre-marital counseling
  • navigating/exploring consensual non-monogamy or open relationships

LGBTQI affirmative.  I have experience working with, and am affirmative of, alternative relationships including polyamorous and open-relationships.
